DOHA: Qatar is a bidder for hosting the 2012 United Nations climate summit. The Arab League Economic Affairs Committee has unanimously given the go-ahead to Qatar to bid for the 18th Conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

South Korea is another country in the fray. The South Korean delegation had announced its decision to bid for the 2012 convention on the sidelines of the recently concluded Copenhagen summit.
The 17th conference of the UN convention scheduled to be held in Mexico in December 2010 will discuss the bids of Qatar and South Korea.
Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Tuajry, Arab League Secretary General Assistant for Economic Affairs, said Doha had the support of the Arab states.
The Arab states are expected to fully coordinate with Group 77. The African bloc and other international groups have come forward to support Qatar.
The Convention on Climate Change sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. It recognises that the climate system is a shared resource whose stability can be affected by industrial and other emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The convention enjoys near universal membership, with 192 countries having ratified it.
Under the convention, the parties will gather and share information on greenhouse gas emissions, national polices and best practices. It would launch national strategies for addressing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the expected impact of climate change, including the provision of financial and technological support to developing countries.
