Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Al-Naimi Tuesday asserted on fairness in achieving the goal set to deal with the climate change, a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns and the greatest global challenge.

Al-Naimi, in his opening remarks for the three-day coordination meeting of the group of converged thought of developing countries on environmental issues and climate change, highlighted the concerns time and again raised by the international community on the major threat the world is facing today due to global warming.

He pointed to the feelings of fear and anxiety by the people on the issue and the potential negative effects associated with it as the climate change and global warming have become one of the most pressing environmental concerns despite the fact that a consensus has never been reached in the debates over its causes and consequences although it has become a significant threat to biodiversity.

The minister said: "We must take action in this regard taking into account the principles contained in the Framework Convention on Climate Change."

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental treaty negotiated at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), popularly known as the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to 14, 1992,

seeking to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

The convention provided a framework for negotiating specific international treaties called "protocols" like famous Kyoto protocol that sets binding obligations on industrialized countries to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Al-Naimi, however, maintained that that the group is united in this critical situation with common positions and wishes to proceed with significant progress toward achieving our common goals of finding a lasting solution to the problem. He affirmed that this meeting is clear evidence that we apply this principle and we are moving in the right direction.

The group of converged thought of developing countries on environmental issues and climate change consists of 26 countries.

The coordination meeting of the group has been organized by the ministry of petroleum and mineral resources here this time.
