More than 60 international climate change negotiators from 35 countries will meet in Auckland next week.

The minister responsible for international climate change negotiations, Tim Groser, said the meeting would focus on "the crucial issue" of transparency around emissions reductions. "We need to agree on how to measure, report and verify individual countries' actions so we can make sure that the global effort is on track".

New Zealand will co-chair the meeting with Mexico and South Africa, who are the current and incoming chairs for the United Nations negotiating process. Mr Groser will lead discussions around reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He facilitated agreement on this issue in Cancun last December.

Mr Groser said the world agreed at that meeting that global warming increases must be kept below two degrees Celcius. "Achieving transparency about emissions is an important step towards achieving the goal that we set in Cancun. This meeting aims to help determine how we monitor our individual and collective progress."
